Soapstone forms from heat and pressure during tectonic plate subduction. The natural stone contains talc, which makes it soft. Different cuts of soapstone will contain varying degrees of talc. The higher the talc content in the soapstone, the softer it is. Soapstone has traditionally had many uses by different cultures.
